Under the IRS Whistleblower Award program, a person who blows the whistle on individuals or corporations that failed to pay the tax owed may be entitled to recover up to 30 percent of the additional tax, penalty and other amounts collected by the IRS.
The law applies to cases in which the amount in dispute exceeds $2 million. If the taxpayer is an individual, his or her gross income must exceed $200,000 for any taxable year at issue. There is a special form and procedure for reporting these claims, and the law requires the Whistleblower Office to analyze these cases with assistance from the whistleblower and his or her counsel.
It is important to note there are other provisions for reporting and receiving a lesser award where the amount at issue is less than $2million.
